Topics

Autumn: Explorers

During this term, we will be exploring the weather and talking about what would make a good explorer. We will also be learning about explorers that have changed the way we think today. Through a series of lively activities, such as creating and filming their own weather forecasts or making their own weather station, the children will build their knowledge of seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK. We will compare hot and cold areas of the world as well as developing locational knowledge and early geographical skills. Later on in the term, we will be learning about explorers such as Neil Armstrong, Christopher Columbus and Ibn Battuta.

Spring: The Great fire of London

During the spring term, the children will be learning about this significant historic event from the 17th Century. Contrast fire-safety from the past with today. Studying the buildings of the period and creating their own buildings. We will be learning rhymes and songs of the time. Studying St Paul’s Cathedral and making sketches, prints, clay sculptures and 3D models inspired by this great building. Enthused by the famous diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, we will be writing diaries and reading them in our class coffee shop! We will also be learning about the food of the time and baking bread.

Summer: TBC

Class points

In our class, the children are working collectively to earn points towards our class treat. These are awarded for outstanding teamwork and representing our class well as a whole around the school.

Each treat is decided democratically by the children, currently we are working towards:

A movie afternoon with treats as chosen by the children!

Homework

Homework is set each week on a Friday to be handed in the following Wednesday. It involves:

  • Spelling practice: either on Spellodrome or using other strategies. An explanation of the rule and some example of words that we are learning will be included on the homework sheet but you can explore the rule and find more of your own too.
  • Reading: developing a love of books through reading your child’s school book, library book, newspaper, magazines, comics, web pages, the possibilities are endless! Ideally this should be recorded in the child’s reading record 5 times a week.
  • An extra task, normally maths or English based. Children should aim to spend 20 minutes on this task to consolidate a concept that we have been learning in class. If it isn’t clear then please let us know on Monday or Tuesday and we’ll look at it together.
