Topics

Autumn: Home Sweet Home

The children will be comparing urban and rural areas. They will be learning the points of a compass and using their map skills to plan a route. They will investigate different materials and have the opportunity to design their dream home. It’s also an opportunity to look at famous art work such as Gaudi buildings and Lowry’s urban art….and you can’t view Lowry without listening to the brilliant music, ‘Matchstalk men and Matchstalk cats and dogs’!

Spring: Carnival of Animals

A fantastic topic to return to after Christmas where the children explore ‘animals including humans’. They will classify different types of mammals and will usually find a creature to investigate because we are not sure if they are reptile or amphibian! We will also be looking at animals in countries outside Europe and use the atlases to discover where in the world animals live in the wild. The children will create their own art work using different media. They will also explore dance movements and perform a dance routine.

Summer: Famous for more than five minutes

This term the children go on a right regal tour of our royal history. They will be given the opportunity to discover what famous kings and queens might have been like and create fact files about them. They’ll also be discovering facts about great explorers and follow them on the journeys they took. The children will look at the art work of Christian Furr and will be taught drawing techniques.

Class points

In our class, the children are working collectively to earn class ‘Gems in a Jar’. The gems are awarded for outstanding teamwork. Castries class will earn gems by completing class routines quickly and quietly or walking around the school in a respectful manner, to name but a few.

Each treat is decided democratically by the children, currently we are working towards:

A play session in the village park!

Homework

  • Read 5 times a week. A regular reading routine is so important as it consolidates phonics and sentence building.
  • Spellings – practise spellings.

Children can learn spellings in all sorts of ways

  • Make the word in playdough
  • Write the word in shaving foam
  • Write them in different coloured felt tips or crayons
  • Paint them with water on a patio
  • Write them in chalk on the patio
  • Build them in Lego
  • Arrange their bodies into letters

Homework After October Half-Term

Linked to the work in class that week. It could be phonics, English, Maths, science or topic.

Set on Fridays and to be brought back by the following Wednesday.
